Which Type of Visa Is Most Commonly Issued to ESL Teachers in China?

China remains one of the most popular destinations for ESL teachers thanks to its growing demand for English education, competitive salaries, and rich cultural experiences. Before starting a teaching job, foreign teachers must secure the correct visa to work legally in the country.

The visa most commonly issued to ESL teachers is the Z visa, China’s official work visa for foreign employees.

What Is a Z Visa?

The Z visa is specifically designed for foreign professionals, including English teachers. It is the only visa that allows teachers to:

  • Work legally and receive a salary.
  • Apply for a Residence Permit to live in China long-term.
  • Access services like opening a bank account or signing a rental agreement.

Working without a Z visa can lead to fines, deportation, and bans from re-entering China, so it is essential to have one before you begin teaching.

Z Visa Requirements for English teachers

To qualify for a Z visa, most teachers need:

  • A bachelor’s degree (any field, though education or English majors are preferred).
  • A TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certificate with at least 120 hours of coursework.
  • Two years of post-graduate work experience (some provinces waive this for licensed teachers).
  • A clean criminal background check issued within six months.
  • A job offer from a licensed school in China.

Application Process

  1. Secure a Job Offer
Only schools with government approval can hire foreign teachers and issue Z visas.
  2. Work Permit Notification
Your employer submits your documents to receive a Notification Letter of Work Permit.
  3. Apply for the Z Visa
Apply at the Chinese embassy or consulate in your home country.
  4. Enter China and Convert to a Residence Permit
After arriving, complete a health check and apply for a Residence Permit, which replaces the Z visa and allows multiple entries.

Tourist visas (L), business visas (F or M), or student visas (X) do not allow legal employment. If a school suggests you work on one of these, it is a major red flag.
