Job Description

Position Title: High School English Teacher
Division: High School
Supervisor: High School Principal

Position Summary:

  • The High School English teacher should have experience in effectively delivering high-quality instruction to a diverse group of learners at the high school level. Comfort in teaching AP English courses is required. Comfort in teaching higher levels of English is greatly preferred.
  • A high-quality candidate has demonstrated evidence and experience in teaching for understanding, using data to inform instruction, and proactive communication with all stakeholders in a school setting. The ideal candidate has experience in or a desire to work in a school moving to a standards-based learning model.
  • A strong candidate desires to collaborate closely with colleagues and school leadership to find the best learning outcomes for students. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of using the Google Suite, is comfortable using learning management software to report grading and provide timely feedback, and understands how to use technology to maximize learning outcomes.


Position Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Qualified and licensed teacher in relevant subject areas
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a high school environment (G9-12)
  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree that supports the teaching role
  • Preferred experience working in an international school
  • Preference is given to those with a Christian background or comfort working in an organization that values Christian beliefs
  • Comfort with the Google Suite and using technology to enhance student learning
  • Comfort with teaching advanced math learners in a high school setting.
  • Preference is given to candidates who can teach up to AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition.


General Responsibilities:

  • Planning and delivering lessons in English in high school (G9-12)
  • Deliver lessons and learning activities that guide students toward understanding
  • Evaluate and advocate for the advancement of the English curriculum
  • Effectively communicate student learning progress to parents, colleagues, leadership, and students
  • Lead after-school activities or athletics programs
  • Participate in student travel and off-campus field experiences.


Key Areas of Responsibility:
Planning and Preparation

  • Instructional and Curriculum Planning
  • Use knowledge of content, students, pedagogy, and resources to design coherent instruction
  • Plan, revise, record, and follow units that provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences
  • Select instructional goals
  • Gather data through assessments and analyze student work to provide a clear, rigorous, and relevant curriculum.


The Classroom

  • Class Management
  • Create an environment of respect and rapport
  • Establish a culture of learning
  • Manage classroom procedures and maintain clear rules and procedures; establish routines for daily tasks and needs
  • Manage student behavior and provide consistent and appropriate discipline
  • Orchestrate smooth transitions and continuity of momentum
  • Organise space and materials to provide effective instruction and a safe learning environment.


Pastoral Care

  • Respond to students’ emotional and social needs
  • Model interpersonal skills, respectful relationships, and problem‐solving, to provide a safe learning environment.


Instruction

  • Deliver developmentally appropriate learning experiences for students; Use a variety of questioning and discussion techniques to engage students in learning
  • Provide differentiated support and instruction to ensure that students develop understanding of content and apply skills.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students
  • Implement best practice in instructional strategies.


Assessment

  • Assess student learning.
  • Plan and administer a variety of appropriate diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments
  • Analyze and use the data provided by the assessments to guide instruction.


Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with colleagues to examine assessment data and student work


Parent Communication

  • Provide timely, clear, and appropriate feedback on student performance and progress so that parents can effectively support and/or celebrate their child’s learning and development.


Goals

  • Set yearly goals; support team, divisional, and school goals
  • Collect and review data related to goals and Concordia competencies in order to improve planning and preparation, classroom management, instruction, or meeting professional responsibilities.


Professional Development

  • Participate in professional growth experiences such as courses, workshops, or conferences in order to improve planning and preparation, classroom management, and instruction, and grow professionally.
